I took this of my dd the other day testing out the 135mmL lens. Someone suggested I enter one of the images from this session so I am! Thank you GG!!

1) Stay away from loud, busy prints.
2) Stay away from graphic tees and athletic shoes.
3) Make sure the colors of your clothing work in harmony. A good way to tell is to lay all of your outfits out and see if anyone outfit looks out of place.
4) Outfits do not need to match exactly however, they should coordinate.
5) Outfits should not overshadow the subjects which is YOU.

About the image…
1) Why do you love this image?
Cuz my girl can jump crazy high, and she was having so much fun! I love how she jumped this time and love her expression and crazy hair.

2) What were your settings with this image?
ISO 100, 1/100, f8. Shot with my Canon 5D Mk II, 24-105 f4 lens. This was with studio lights. I just got them and I’m still trying to figure them out and find my voice with studio work.

3) Tell me about your ideal client.
My ideal client would be someone who was not afraid to be themselves in front of my camera. Someone who didn’t just want the “smile at the camera” pictures and would trust in me. But since I love shooting children the very mostest, I find that they are always themselves in front of the camera. I guess I would want a child that was able to follow instructions, but still be pure and true to his/her personality.

4) What is a random thing about you?
I have had a lot of concussions. I coulda been a jeenyus. I mean, genius.

5) What do you wish you would have known when you were first starting?
I wish I had put my camera into manual a lot earlier. I had a digital SLR for a year before I switched it off of Auto. I’ve always had creativity, but being creative when you are in Auto and have your pop up flash going off just doesn’t give you the image that you have in your head.

6) If you could be invisible for one day with your camera…
I would probably want to follow another photographer around. And since I would be invisible, it would have to be someone that I thought wouldn’t WANT me around, cuz otherwise I would much rather be visible so I could chat.

7) What talent would you most like to have?
Neverending creativity.

8 ) Did you go to college? What was your major?
Yes. I went to UC Davis. I majored in Psychology, but ended up deciding on physical therapy my 4th year of college. I spent my 4th and 5th year of college getting all my physical therapy prerequisites. And you know what? I LOVED human anatomy. I was totally into the cadaver lab. I find it amazing that we are all built the same on the inside, but can be so completely different on the outside. So, I’m a physical therapist and work part time helping people get better. I love it. Who knew that physical therapy and photography would end up being my career path? I need to add some other “ph” words to the list. Maybe philanthropist? physician? phone repairwoman? Hmmmm….

9) What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my mothering skills. I feel like I am doing a very good job raising my children. They show a lot of love and respect to everyone. They have good manners and are just all around really very very sweet children.

10) are you bored with all of these questions?
Yes. I can’t think of anything else to talk about.

About the image…

1) Why do you love this image?
This was from my son’s 1st birthday shoot. At the time I left our session feeling really disappointed because neither of my kids was being cooperative and it really got me down. I didn’t think I had any success. I wouldn’t even pull the photos off the memory card for a few days. I was pleasantly surprised at what I saw! This one is my favorite of the bunch. I just love the way they are looking at each other, the way the light is wrapping around their faces. My daughter was leaning forward getting ready to tickle him and I can just feel her mischievous giggle.

2) What were your settings with this image?
I used my 24-70 on my D700, ISO 500, 1/250, f2.8

About Photography…

3) Are you formally educated or a self taught photographer?
A little bit of both. I have a bachelor’s in Photographic Arts, but it dealt with B&W darkroom printing. The transition to digital was self taught and it was really hard on me. I had to learn all over again.

4) A good portrait means ….
An image that takes your breath away when you see it. It freezes time, so you will always be able to go back and remember the particular look in your daughter’s eyes when she looks at you, the way your son’s entire face lights up with his belly laugh, the fat rolls on your baby. It’s not just a recording of what you look like, but it also memorializes your love for each other.

5) Your favorite female photographer.
Annie Leibovitz. Sally Mann. Connie Imboden.

6) How do you juggle photography business and family and the rest of your life?
I take on a very limited number of sessions each month while my children are young.

7) Do you have happy and depressed moments during your creative cycle?
I think that’s part of working in a creative field– you are either on top of the world or you think you are the scum of the earth. It just sort of goes with the territory.

8 )Tell me about your ideal client.
They trust me, follow my clothing advice, and act like I’m not even there when we shoot. The family is just so into each other that they laugh, snuggle and play without concerning themselves with what I’m doing. People not necessarily worried about everyone looking at the camera, but instead wanting portraits of everyone loving on everyone else.

9) What is the one thing that you tell every client?
Be yourself!

10) Do you have a phrase that you always use during your shoots?
Snuggle Up!

In reality there are really only a few days in your life that you will treasure with all your heart. One of those days will most likely be your wedding day and another is the day you welcome your children into the world. These days will pass before you know it. Most save for their wedding day and lavish on a beautiful dress, a big wedding and of course the ultimate photographer. Having a child is like having a wedding. This event really should be planned out somewhat like a wedding day. I mean how often are you going to have a newborn? For most people, only once or twice.

After all the swaddle blankets are given away, after all the binkies are gone, after they are sleeping through the night and they are in their toddler bed, what are you going to treasure from their newborn stage? That Pottery Barn crib isn’t going to bring you memories that you can hold on forever. That’s been sold on craigslist and is gone.

When you are a new mom the last thing that will be on your mind is arranging for a newborn photography session. You are going to BE.A.BUSY.GIRL. and I mean BUSY. You will only be thinking of feeding, changing diapers and SLEEPING!! Scheduling your baby’s portrait session with me before you deliver is so convenient. You have your appointment on my books. You contact me when you deliver. I am there in 6-10 days. I bring my studio to your home. Done!

I get many inquiries from moms wanting newborn portraits of their 4+ week old baby. My heartaches to have to tell them that their baby has already outgrown the newborn stage for photography. Many don’t realize it but babies lose so much flexibility after only 2 weeks, they are no longer sleeping as solidly and their skin can tend to break out. All this means is that the newborn shots you see on my site are not always achievable.

Plan ahead and schedule your newborn session with me before your baby arrives! It’s not something you will regret.

About the image…
1) Why do you love this image?
I love the stillness and the peace of this image. Life can get so busy and when babies are little it is easy to forget to take in the moment and enjoy it because too soon these moments will be gone.

2) What were your settings with this image?
I shot this with my Canon 5D mark ii and my 50 mm lens. ISO 1000 SS 250 f/2.2

About Photography…
3) What do you love about Photography?
I love having the ability to capture a moment that can be re-lived over and over through a photograph.

4) What type of Photography do you specialize in and why?
I love newborns and children. Children seem to change in the blink of an eye and I love to capture that moment in time.

About your life?
5) What are your favorite hobbies and pastimes?
I love gardening. I love flowers and I find nothing more beautiful than a garden filled with flowers. I look forward to spring every year so that I can start digging the dirt.

6) Who or what inspires you?
There are so many wonderful photographers that I admire but what truly inspires me is the everyday beauty around me. I try to see the world in a different way… through my lens.

7) Who are some of your favorite singers/bands?
I enjoy whatever is playing at the moment. In the car, we can listen to preschool sds or Taylor Swift (my six year old sings along which is so fun to watch!). In fact, my six year old probably knows the songs on the radio better than I do.

8 ) What is your favorite movie of all time?
Don’t laugh but for some reason I love Sweet Home Alabama. I don’t know why but every time I am channel surfing and see that it is on I have to stop and watch it even though I have seen it a million times.

9) What would your ideal day be like?
Playing with my family on a nice warm beach on an island in the Caribbean. The warm sand and sun always sounds like a perfect day.

10) If you weren’t a photographer, what other profession would you like to pursue?
I have always wanted to be home with my children and photography allows me to do that. So I think that I have the best of both worlds!
