Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve | A Mother/Photographer’s Perspective on Newborn Photography

July 5, 2011

When I had my first child I didn’t even know that Newborn Photographers existed. I didn’t realize that in the land of photography, newborns meant 2 weeks or younger. Luckily, when I was pregnant with my 2nd child a friend linked me to a local newborn photographer. I cannot tell you how much I LOVE those images. It was an investment that I do not regret.

In reality there are really only a few days in your life that you will treasure with all your heart. One of those days will most likely be your wedding day and another is the day you welcome your children into the world. These days will pass before you know it. Most save for their wedding day and lavish on a beautiful dress, a big wedding and of course the ultimate photographer. Having a child is like having a wedding. This event really should be planned out somewhat like a wedding day. I mean how often are you going to have a newborn? For most people, only once or twice.

After all the swaddle blankets are given away, after all the binkies are gone, after they are sleeping through the night and they are in their toddler bed, what are you going to treasure from their newborn stage? That Pottery Barn crib isn’t going to bring you memories that you can hold on forever. That’s been sold on craigslist and is gone.

When you are a new mom the last thing that will be on your mind is arranging for a newborn photography session. You are going to BE.A.BUSY.GIRL. and I mean BUSY. You will only be thinking of feeding, changing diapers and SLEEPING!! Scheduling your baby’s portrait session with me before you deliver is so convenient. You have your appointment on my books. You contact me when you deliver. I am there in 6-10 days. I bring my studio to your home. Done!

I get many inquiries from moms wanting newborn portraits of their 4+ week old baby. My heartaches to have to tell them that their baby has already outgrown the newborn stage for photography. Many don’t realize it but babies lose so much flexibility after only 2 weeks, they are no longer sleeping as solidly and their skin can tend to break out. All this means is that the newborn shots you see on my site are not always achievable.

Plan ahead and schedule your newborn session with me before your baby arrives! It’s not something you will regret.

Please visit my site to view my newborn and maternity galleries. Mention this article and receive 25 custom birth announcements* when you book your newborn prior to delivery.

And because a blog post just isn’t much without newborn photos…..Just a couple!

I love the analogy to investing in a wedding dress, or a Pottery Barn crib. Nothing wrong with buying those things, but none of that will mean more than the photo memories you capture on those special days – your wedding, and the first days with your newborn. Great post, C – I hope many read it and take it to heart. Those precious early days cannot be recreated and if you were in my area, you’d be my choice to help me preserve them.

you hit the nail on the head – what you wrote about being new moms being busy is SO TRUE! But more important is the things that you remember and treasure. Those first few moments are so fleeting. And you never get back those moments. I regret all the time not getting my daughter’s newborn portraits taken. Your work is gorgeous and what you wrote is true!

We spent a LOT of money on newborn pictures and my only regret is that I didn’t get an album. Everything else gets passed on but you treasure the photographs forever.
